The central building was completed in 1868. The main hall as we know it today was added 64 years later, in 1932. The building has been restored several times to modernise it, most recently in 2001, when the South Terminal was also built to ease passenger traffic.
The station complex is more than just a building: it is a valuable historical monument. The renowned architect Oleksandr Verbytskyi worked on its reconstruction and combined two styles, Constructivism and neo-Baroque, which became the hallmark of the complex’s design.
A distinctive feature of the main building of the Central Station is the fine frescoes and paintings on its walls and ceilings. The decoration blends the character of an official building with the feel of a museum, so travellers have plenty to look at while waiting for their train. There are also places nearby for a good coffee or a bite to eat, and shops where you can buy what you need for the journey.
