Baggage transportation

What Weight of Hand Luggage Is Allowed on Passenger Trains?

A passenger is allowed to carry hand luggage with a total weight of up to 50 kg. Up to 36 kg inclusive can be carried free of charge. For luggage exceeding 36 kg up to 50 kg (no more than 14 kg), the passenger must pay according to the applicable baggage transportation fare.

Hand luggage weighing more than 50 kg is not permitted in passenger carriages.

How Can Weapons Be Transported?

The transportation of weapons in hand luggage is prohibited, except in certain cases, such as the transportation of service or hunting weapons.

In such cases, the passenger must have a valid permit confirming the right to possess and use the relevant type of weapon.

The weapon must be properly packed and unloaded, and its transportation must be approved in accordance with safety requirements and the carrier's internal rules.

How Can I Transport a Bicycle?

One bicycle may be transported free of charge as part of the hand-luggage allowance, provided that it is disassembled and packed.

Bicycles may be transported in compartment and sleeper carriages of night express and passenger trains in disassembled and packed condition, provided that they can be freely placed in the areas designated for hand luggage and that the total dimensions of the packaging do not exceed 200 cm.

Conditions for Transporting Live Animals and Birds on Domestic Services

Passengers may carry domestic animals that do not pose a threat to others (small-breed dogs, cats, domestic birds, etc.) on trains and in carriages of all categories using special transportation containers (cage, carrier, box, basket, backpack, bag, or another container with a waterproof absorbent bottom) that prevent damage to or contamination of the carriage's interior equipment and passengers' belongings.

Animals must be transported in areas designated for hand luggage:

  • in night-train carriages — under the berth or on the berth next to the passenger;

  • in carriages with seats — on the passenger's lap or under the seats.

Transporting Small-Breed Dogs

Small-breed dogs may be transported without a special carrier in carriages of all categories with sleeping berths, provided that all unoccupied places are purchased at the adult passenger fare.

Transporting Large-Breed Dogs

Large-breed dogs (over 45 cm at the withers) and dogs of any size classified as dangerous breeds under the List of Dangerous Dog Breeds approved by Resolution No. 1164 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated November 10, 2021, must be transported with a muzzle and leash (chain or strap restraint):

a) in a separate compartment of a compartment carriage or a higher-class carriage — no more than two dogs, provided that all unoccupied seats are purchased at the adult passenger fare;

b) on Intercity and Intercity+ trains — provided that all seats located together in a single block next to the seat of the passenger accompanying the dog are purchased at the adult passenger fare.

Such dogs are not allowed to occupy passenger seats. The dog must be placed on the floor under or next to the seats, provided that this does not create a danger or inconvenience for other passengers.

The accompanying person is responsible for supervising the dog to prevent any disturbance to the peace and safety of passengers and the carrier's staff.

If the carrier cannot arrange travel in a separate compartment for the transportation of domestic animals, such transportation is not permitted.

In Passenger Carriages with Seats

a) Large-breed dogs (over 45 cm at the withers) are transported in the end vestibules of the first and last carriages with a muzzle and leash (chain or strap restraint) under the supervision of an accompanying person.

The accompanying person must occupy a seat near the carriage exit and supervise the dog to prevent any disturbance to the peace and safety of passengers and the carrier's staff.

Small-breed dogs may be transported on the owner's lap or under the owner's seat.

b) Domestic animals (small-breed dogs, cats, domestic birds, etc.) — no more than two animals — must be transported in special carriers (cage, container, box, basket, backpack, bag, or another container with a waterproof absorbent bottom) that prevent damage to or contamination of the carriage's interior equipment and passengers' belongings.

No more than one piece of hand luggage may be used for this purpose. Animals must be placed in areas designated for hand luggage, on the passenger's lap, or under the seats.

Guide Dogs and Service Dogs

Guide dogs accompanying persons with disabilities and service dogs (dogs transported with military personnel during the period of martial law in Ukraine and for 180 days after its termination or cancellation) may be transported in carriages and trains of all categories free of additional charge, provided they have a muzzle (except small-breed guide dogs that are not included in the List of Dangerous Dog Breeds approved by Resolution No. 1164 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated November 10, 2021) and a leash (chain or strap restraint).

A guide dog must remain next to the passenger it accompanies and must be kept on a short leash (chain or strap restraint).

In all cases, the passenger is responsible for complying with sanitary and hygienic requirements when transporting animals and for remedying any consequences of non-compliance.

A properly issued veterinary document for domestic animals is mandatory.

A fee for transporting domestic animals accompanying a passenger in passenger carriages is charged per animal or place according to the baggage transportation tariff for 20 kg. Transportation is оформed with a baggage receipt.
