When we set off on a long-awaited train journey, many of us have no idea that there are some great perks and entitlements that can make the trip even more comfortable and memorable. In this article we introduce you to a world of little-known free services that most of you may never have heard of.
The secret of station toilets
With a paper or electronic ticket you are automatically entitled to use the toilets free of charge at the stations along your route. Note that paid toilets or paid waiting rooms with extra services are only allowed where there is no free alternative.
Free boiling water and more
If you are travelling in winter and worried about catching a cold, don't be. The carriage attendant must give you free boiling water to warm up. What's more, they should also bring you a glass and a spoon to make your journey more comfortable.
Upper berths and the law of gravity
While enjoying the view from the window or listening to the clatter of the wheels, we sometimes forget about physics. Upper berths have their advantages too: they must be fitted with special safety straps that stop you falling off while the train is moving.
Cleaning and bed linen are included in the price
While you enjoy the view or relax, the carriage attendants take care of cleaning the carriage, including the bed linen. This service is included in the ticket price, so you don't need to worry about gathering up your bedding before you arrive.
Toilet supplies
If the toilet in your carriage runs out of soap or toilet paper, don't hesitate to ask the carriage attendant. They will provide the hygiene supplies you need.
Getting back to a missed station
If you accidentally miss your station, don't be disheartened. Go to the train manager with your ticket, and they will draw up a report extending the validity of your ticket, allowing you to return free of charge to the destination shown on it.
A first-aid kit in safe hands
The carriage attendant must always have a first-aid kit and will give you first aid if necessary.
Visiting a friend along the way
If you suddenly remember that a friend lives at an intermediate station and you would like to visit them, you have 10 days to do so. Simply get off at the station, go to the station duty officer with your ticket, and they will stamp it "Ticket validity suspended". You can then continue your journey by exchanging the ticket for a new one.
Now that you know all these useful details and perks, your rail adventure in Ukraine will be even brighter. Travel in comfort, confident that your wellbeing is looked after and your rights are respected.
