How to rest on a train: 10 tips for a good night's sleep

Rail travel can be pleasant and comfortable, especially if you know how to get a good night's sleep on the way.  The ticket service AnyTrain shares ten tips to help you rest well on the train.

  1. Sleep mask and earplugs: Noise and light on the train can make it hard to fall asleep. So don't forget to bring a sleep mask to block out the light and earplugs to shut out the noise.
  2. Comfortable clothes: Wear soft, loose clothing that won't restrict your movement or make you uncomfortable while you sleep. Natural, breathable fabrics are best.
  3. A seat in the middle of the carriage: When buying your ticket, try to choose a place in the middle of the carriage. This helps you avoid extra swaying and shaking that could disturb your sleep.
  4. Blanket: Even if the weather seems warm, it is always a good idea to have a blanket to hand. The temperature on the train can change when the air conditioning is on, and a blanket will help you stay comfortable while you sleep.
  5. Relaxing music: Prepare a playlist of meditative or calm music in advance. It will help you relax and wind down before sleep.
  6. Neck pillow: If you are travelling in a seating carriage and want to sleep, bring an inflatable travel pillow. There is nothing worse than waking up with a stiff neck.  A neck pillow will make your sleep more comfortable and help you avoid neck and back pain.
  7. Keep your belongings safe: Make sure your valuables are secure. It is best to keep them next to you in a dedicated bag or backpack so that you can easily keep an eye on them while you sleep.
  8. Avoid heavy meals and alcohol: Avoid overeating and drinking alcohol before sleep. Heavy food and alcohol can disrupt your sleep and cause discomfort.
  9. The right position: Find the sleeping position that suits you best. It may be half-sitting or lying on your side with a pillow under your head.
  10. A regular sleep routine: Try to stick to your usual sleep schedule even when travelling. This will help your body adapt to new conditions more quickly and give you better rest.

Follow these ten tips and you will sleep well on the train and wake up refreshed and ready for new adventures. Have a pleasant journey!
