Travelling by Train with a Baby: Discounts and Tips

Travelling by Train with a Baby: Discounts and Tips

A train journey with a small child can be an exciting and memorable experience for the whole family, but it can also be stressful if you are not prepared for a few particular features. Ukraine has certain discounts and rules for travelling with children. Following a few simple tips and knowing these benefits will help make your journey more comfortable and carefree. In this article we look at the steps that will help you prepare for a train trip with a baby in Ukraine.

1. Plan and buy your tickets

The first step in preparing for a trip with a small child is choosing the route and buying tickets. Pay attention to the journey time, availability of seats for children and the facilities on the train. Try to choose a convenient departure time so as not to disrupt your child's daily routine. It is best to choose seats in a compartment or SV carriage, where there is more space and comfort. And remember that a lower berth is better than an upper one, as it makes it easier to reach and look after your child.

2. Learn the rules and carriage policy in Ukraine

Ukraine has specific rules and policies for carrying infants and children. Children under 5 (who do not turn 5 during the trip) can travel by train free of charge without their own berth. If you have a child of this age, check the carriage rules and discounts with your chosen railway company. In some cases discounts apply if a separate berth is needed for the child.

3. Pack the essentials

Make a list of the things your baby will need during the trip. Include swaddling cloths, a supply of nappies, spare clothes, toys, baby care products and their favourite food.

4. Prepare for feeding

If your baby is still breastfed or bottle-fed, think about where and when you will feed them on the train. Trains usually have places for feeding children. Check this information in advance and plan for your baby's feeding needs on board.

5. Consider the water supply on the train

If your baby needs hot water for preparing food, bear in mind that access to hot water may be limited on some trains in Ukraine. It is therefore better to carry a thermos of hot water and everything you need to prepare baby food.

6. Plan some entertainment

Entertaining a child on a train can be fun and interesting for both you and your baby. Here are a few ideas to make the journey exciting and enjoyable for your little one:

Games and activities: Take your baby's favourite toys and play with them on the train. Soft toys, building blocks and colouring books make great entertainment.

Audiobooks and music: Prepare a player with audiobooks or music your baby loves. It helps create a cosy atmosphere and will keep your little one occupied for a long time.

Looking out of the window: A train journey is a wonderful opportunity to watch the world go by. Encourage your baby to look out of the window and spot interesting things, animals or natural features.

Meeting other passengers: If your baby is sociable, let them get to know other children on the train. This can lead to new friendships and fun.

7. Take a first-aid kit

Don't forget to take a first-aid kit with the necessary medicines and supplies. Your child may have minor mishaps such as bumps, scratches or a cold, and a well-stocked kit can help if needed.

Be ready for surprises and ease your baby's worries

Travelling with a small child is certainly an exciting but sometimes unpredictable adventure. Unexpected situations may arise, and the key is to stay calm and be ready to change plans. Remember that the main goal is your baby's comfort and safety.

Small children are often afraid of unfamiliar places and events, including a train journey. Before you leave, tell your baby about the coming adventure and show them pictures of the train and the railway station. Try to make the experience interesting and less frightening for them.
