When we set off on a long-awaited train journey, many of us are unaware of the surprising extras and privileges that can make the trip even more comfortable and memorable. In this article we introduce you to the world of hidden free privileges and services that most of you have probably never heard of.
The secrets of station toilets
With a paper or electronic ticket, you are automatically entitled to use the toilets free of charge at the stations along your route. Note that paid toilets or paid waiting rooms with extra services only operate where there is no free alternative.
Free hot water and more
If you are travelling in winter and worried about getting cold, don't be. The carriage attendant must provide you with free boiling water to warm up. What is more, you should also be brought a glass and a spoon to make your trip more comfortable.
Upper berths and the law of gravity
While enjoying the view from the window or listening to the sound of the wheels, we sometimes forget about physics. Upper berths have their own advantages too. They must be fitted with special straps that stop you falling while the train is moving.
Cleaning and bed linen are included in the fare
While you enjoy the view or relax, the attendants take care of cleaning the carriage, including the bed linen. This service is included in the ticket price, so you don't need to worry about gathering up your bedding before arrival.
Toilet supplies
If the carriage toilet runs out of soap or toilet paper, don't hesitate to ask the attendant. They will give you the hygiene supplies you need.
Returning to a missed station
If you accidentally miss your station, don't be upset. Go to the train manager with your ticket, and they will issue a report extending the validity of your ticket, allowing you to return free of charge to the destination shown on it.
A first-aid kit in safe hands
The carriage attendant must always have a first-aid kit. They will give you first aid if needed.
Visiting a friend on the way
If you suddenly remember that you have a friend living at an intermediate station and would like to visit them, you have 10 days to do so. Simply get off at the station, go to the station duty officer with your ticket, and they will stamp it "Ticket validity suspended". You can then continue your journey by exchanging the ticket for a new one.
Now that you know about all these interesting details and facilities, your rail adventure in Ukraine will be even more colourful. Travel in comfort, confident that your well-being is looked after and your rights are respected.
