Main function: full control on the move
The emergency brake is a device for stopping a train in an emergency. In a dangerous situation, such as a fire, a threat to passengers' health or other emergency, anyone can activate it. This immediately applies the brakes on all carriages, minimising the risks.
Technology and how it works
Modern trains are equipped with sophisticated control and automation systems that ensure they run efficiently and safely. When the emergency brake is activated, the control system receives a signal and immediately cuts power to the engine, starting the braking process. All this happens within seconds, which is critical in an emergency.
The legal side: rules and liability
Before deciding to pull the emergency brake, you must be absolutely sure that the situation really requires an emergency stop. Misusing the device can have serious consequences, including criminal liability. Using the emergency brake when there is no danger can stop the train for a long time, disrupting the timetable and causing economic damage.
In Ukraine the consequences of misusing the emergency brake are extremely serious and can be not only financial but also criminal. Under the law, the fine for stopping a train without urgent need can be up to 50 tax-free minimum incomes. Other penalties are also possible: correctional labour for up to 2 years, arrest for up to 6 months or restriction of liberty for up to 3 years.
Evolution and modernisation: from a manual lever to electronic systems
Looking at the history of rail transport, emergency brakes were mechanical for a long time and required physical effort to activate. Modern emergency brakes contain electronic components that make activation much simpler and faster.
The emergency brake: an unsung hero of safety
The emergency brake on a train is not just a lever on the wall or a button behind glass. It is a complex device that is part of a large safety system. Its presence and proper operation can save passengers' lives and health at a critical moment. So next time you see this "mysterious lever", you will know its true value.
