History of rail transport in Ukraine

History of rail transport in Ukraine

The railway network as a driving force of progress

The first steps towards building railway infrastructure in Ukraine were taken back in the 19th century, when the Russian Empire laid its first railway lines. The opening of the line between Kharkiv and Lozova in 1861 was the prelude to the further expansion of the country's rail network.

Progress and economic growth

As rail transport developed, Ukraine became covered by a dense network of railways that linked its regions. New lines and stations boosted trade and stimulated industrial development.

The era of Ukraine's state railway

The creation of Ukraine's state railway, Ukrzaliznytsia, in 1991 was an important milestone in the development of rail transport. Ukrzaliznytsia took on responsibility for managing and developing the country's railway infrastructure.

Modernisation and new construction

Today the authorities are actively implementing programmes to modernise and build new lines and stations to make transport more efficient and safer. Railway infrastructure continues to be developed to meet modern requirements and standards.

Future prospects

Rail transport remains a key part of Ukraine's infrastructure, linking the regions and carrying passengers and freight. Continued development of railway infrastructure will support the country's further progress and prosperity.
