Ivano-Frankivsk was founded in 1662 as Stanislaviv, named after Stanisław Rewera Potocki, one of the town's founders. It began as a fortified castle and gradually grew into an important centre of trade and culture. In 1962 the city was renamed Ivano-Frankivsk in honour of Ivan Franko, the great Ukrainian writer and public figure, who was born in the village of Nahuievychi (Lviv region) and had no direct connection with the city. Today Ivano-Frankivsk lies in western Ukraine close to the Carpathians and has around 362 years of history.
