Food Train: A Unique Kitchen on Rails That Cooks and Helps

Food Train: A Unique Kitchen on Rails That Cooks and Helps

In a world where innovation has become the norm, imagine a train that not only carries people but also works as a self-contained kitchen producing around 10,000 meals a day. Yes, you read that right! Let's take a closer look at the remarkable story of Ukrzaliznytsia's Food Train, a game-changing project.

How did it all begin?

Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's national railway, recently completed the world's first kitchen train. But how was the idea born? It all started with a desire to support fellow Ukrainians in difficult times, especially in wartime.

The kitchen train: what's on board?

The train consists of six carriages, each with its own unique function.

  1. Generator carriage

The generator carriage, equipped with its own fuelling station, supplies the electricity the train needs to operate independently for 5–7 days.

  1. Refrigerator carriage with a freezer

Next comes the refrigerator carriage with a freezer, which keeps food fresh and well stored, helping to produce high-quality meals.

  1. Cold and hot kitchens

Two carriages are dedicated to the kitchen: one for preparing ingredients and the other for the final cooking of tasty dishes. Imagine a kitchen on the move that can make everything from soups and porridges to salads and meat dishes.

  1. Staff carriage and baggage carriage

The staff carriage keeps the train crew comfortable, with a shower and a washing machine. The baggage carriage holds 27,000 litres of water and includes filtration and pumping stations for the train's needs.

Howard Buffett's contribution

The whole project is generously funded by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Howard Buffett himself is a regular Ukrzaliznytsia passenger and actively supports a variety of railway projects, including the “Iron Shift” initiative.
